CAST INSURANCE Reimburses the production company for any extra expenditure necessarily incurred in completing principal photography as a result of the death, injury or illness of scheduled artists (principal performer or the director). Remember: that animals can also be insured for similar coverage, see
Animal Mortality & Extra Expense Insurance. Limit is usually an amount equal to at least 100% of the the film budget. Insurers usually include a short period that includes preproduction cast coverage and post production cast coverage. PRE-PRODUCTION
This insurance protects the production company should incurred cost and expenses be tied to the availability of a contracted director, producer or actor; it also covers extra expense incurred in the event of death or disability of an insured director, producer or actor during Pre-Production.

EXTENDED PRE-PRODUCTION This insurance is normally required when the period of insurance is measured in months rather than weeks (otherwise the Pre-Production element of the Film Producers Indemnity insurance is adequate).
POST-PRODUCTION This provides coverage similar to Cast insurance for directors, producers, editors and others during the post-production period. It is needed when delays due to the disability or death of such persons would cause the production company to incur considerable extra expenses in completing the film.

Essential Element Cast Coverage This coverage gives the production company the right to abandon a production (as opposed to the insurance company) should the essential element cast participant become incapacitated to the point where they cannot complete the production Essential Element Insurance covers, among other things, all production costs (including story costs, interest and financing charges) spent or incurred prior to the abandonment of the Picture in the event that any cast member or other personnel deemed “key” or essential shall require replacement.

Animal Mortality & Extra Expense This coverage reimburses the Production Company for the pre-established value of an animal who becomes deceased during a production. Animal Extra Expense would provide a "cast-type coverage" for insured animals that would reimburse the out-of-pocket expense incurred as a result of the interruption, postponement or cancellation of the production resulting from injury, death or illness to the animal so insured.
Animals require insurance just like cast members. If you are planning a shoot using animals, it is important to determine the role of the animals in the production. A risk management assessment of an animals role may determine that subtle changes in the script and story board greatly reduce your cost of risk and exposure.

   * The type and number of animals used
   * The insurable value of each animal.
   * Description of the scenes the animals will be in.
   * The total duration of the animal use
   * A Veterinary Certificate from the owner.
   * Who will be handling the animal during the filming operations
   * History and record of the animals career

FINANCIAL

Negative Film & Videotape Insurance covers "all risk" associated with physical loss, or damage to raw film stock, exposed film, whether developed or undeveloped, including computer generated images or sound, videotape or soundtrack  It provides coverage for the extra expenses (or, in the event of necessary abandonment, aborted costs) incurred in re-shooting or re-recording the lost or damaged material. Limit of coverage is an amount equal to at least 100% of budget.

Faulty Stock, Camera and Processing provides coverage for the extra expense incurred in re-shooting or re-recording lost or damaged material when there is a loss resulting from faulty materials, faulty equipment, faulty developing or processing, or faulty editing. Caused by or resulting from fogging or the use of faulty sound equipment, faulty developing, faulty editing and faulty processing.

Adverse Weather, Extra Expense  or Rain Insurance This coverage pays for extra expenses actually incurred by the production company in the event of postponement, cancellation or abandonment of any or all of the filming due to adverse weather (or rain) which reasonably and necessarily prevents the filming from taking place.

Money & Securities, Broad Form Insurance covering, among other things, the loss of money or other securities through disappearance, destruction or wrongful abstraction at any location site any place in the world in an amount equal to the greater of $25,000 or the amount of the highest estimated weekly cash payroll for the Picture.

Property Damage Liability Insurance covering, among other things, the damage to or destruction of the property of others, including, without limitation, the loss of use of that property while such property is in the care, custody or control of the producer of the Picture. Coverage does not apply to liability for damage to property caused by operation of any motor vehicle, aircraft or water craft, including damage to the foregoing; or liability for damage to any property rented or leased that may be covered under props, sets, or wardrobe; or miscellaneous equipment insurance.  This coverage is not included under a Comprehensive General Liability Policy.  Property Damage Liability Insurance written as part of a comprehensive general liability policy excludes damage to any property in the production company's care, custody or control.

Liability Coverage

Commercial General Liability Insurance provides coverage for claims of bodily injury and/or property damage arising out of the filming of a picture.  This coverage is required prior to filming on city and state roads or on any location sites requiring permits or certificates. International Endorsement covers the cost of defending a suit in a foreign country.

Excess Liability/Umbrella Liability A special liability policy that serves three main functions: provide high excess coverage over a primary or underlying liability policy; provide broader coverages than the primary liability policy, usually excess of a self-insured retention; and provide a drop-down feature that automatically replaces coverage provided by underlying policies when they are reduced or exhausted by losses.

Automobile Liability Owned Auto Insurance covers autos registered to, or purchased by, the production company. Hired Auto Insurance is required if the production company plans to rent or hire vehicles.
Non-Owned Auto Insurance provides coverage, if you are sued as a result of damage caused by an employee during the course and scope of company business.

Commercial Vehicle Physical Damage (CVPD) Pays for damage to or destruction of mobile equipment vans, mobile studio units, cinemobiles, honeywagons, generators, portable dressing rooms and similar type vehicles. Coverage applies to declared vehicles for amounts up to specified values or limits. Coverage may also apply to motor vehicles owned by the production company or any rented private passenger cars, if specifically endorsed to the policy.

Aircraft Liability protects insureds from claims by other parties ("third parties") for bodily injury or death and property damage; the claim has to result from an occurrence related to the operation of the aircraft.

Hull Insurance - coverage for physical damage done to the aircraft. It is not liability coverage and is therefore triggered by a covered event, regardless of the reason for the damage or loss.

Watercraft Liability coverage provides protection for legal liability because of an accident resulting from the ownership, maintenance, or use of watercraft, including bodily injury, property damage and legal defense.
Guild/Union Travel Accident (GUTA) Insurance provides special accident coverage that is required by various Union and Guild contracts. Coverage is blanket, and the limits of liability meet all signatory requirements.  Coverage may also be extended to nonunion employees up to a designated benefit limit.

Workers' Compensation is required by provincial and or state law and applies to all temporary or permanent cast or production crew members. Individuals who consider themselves "independent contractors" or "subcontractors" cam be held to be employees as far as Workers' Compensation is concerned. If an employee is injured during the course of employment, coverage pays for hospitalization and doctor bills, disability benefits or death benefits. Employers' Liability Insurance covers an employer's liability for bodily injury to employees occurring within the scope of their employment when that liability is not covered by workers' compensation. Employers’ Liability Insurance is required in some jurisdictions.

Foreign Voluntary Workers' Compensation A compensation policy endorsement that extends benefits to nationals of the Canada/United States who are hired or assigned to work outside the country and are outside the jurisdiction of any compulsory workers' compensation or similar act.
